Fight in Ashram area, investigation underway after four natives beaten up

New Delhi: Four Manipur natives living in Jeevan Nagar in Ashram area of the national capital were allegedly beaten up by some assailants, police said on Saturday.
According to police, the incident, which took place on Thursday, came to light after a video of the alleged attack by one of the victims went viral on social media.
Police said preliminary investigation revealed that a man was beaten after a fight and he was taken to a nearby hospital in a PCR van, which responded to the fight. The victims, in their complaint, claimed that the accused were also residents of Manipur, police said, adding that both the groups quarreled accusing each other of insulting the women who had accompanied them.

Officials said the accused have been identified, adding that it was not an ethnic conflict. However, according to the police, the victims belonged to the Meitei community of Manipur while the accused were from the Poumai community. Viral footage shows four people – identified by police as a man, his wife, his sister and a family friend – who were allegedly punched, kicked and stomped on a narrow-section by the attackers. Police said in a statement, “A PCR call was received at around 2.30 am on November 1, in which the caller reported a fight in Sunlight Colony police station area. EO Will-Kilokari, reached New Delhi.”

A complaint was lodged at Sunlight Colony police station regarding the fight.
“On November 30, after dinner at around 11.30 pm, I, along with my sister, friend and wife, was going to drop my friend to his house. On the way, about three people (including a lady) came up to us and asked us to book a ride online to Munirka as their phone battery was drained.

While waiting for ride confirmation, one of them started abusing and insulting us. They beat up my wife and sister. During the fight, he called and after 02-03 minutes, he was surrounded by several people and started beating us,” the complaint said.
Police said preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and the accused knew each other.
