Finance Ministry in its report expressed concern over the rising prices of tomatoes

Similarly, the inflation of tomato, myrobalan, cumin, ginger, arhar dal and urad dal has robbed the pockets of the common people. So the inflation of tomatoes has increased the concern of the Finance Ministry as well. In the Annual Economic Review released by the Economic Division of the Ministry of Finance for the financial year 2022-23, it is clearly written that due to domestic reasons like unseasonal rains, there is pressure on the prices of some vegetables like tomatoes.
The Finance Ministry has said in this report that even after the reduction in wholesale-based inflation due to the effect of El Nino, consumers are facing the brunt of its effect on retail prices. According to the Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs, on July 6, tomato is available at Rs 120 in Delhi, Rs 140 in Gurugram, Rs 152 in Kolkata and Rs 120 in Patna. The Finance Ministry said in its report that in the global supply chain Inflation has come down in the second half of FY 2022-23 due to reforms, policy decisions of the government and the tightening of monetary policy by the RBI. But due to unseasonal rains, an increase in the prices of some vegetables including tomatoes is being seen.
Expressing concern in the report, it has been said that due to the effect of El Nino on domestic food prices and the reduction in wholesale prices, despite the reduction in retail prices, the inflation rate may remain high. The report said that the pace of growth could be affected due to global tensions, upheaval in global financial systems, fall in global stock market, effect of El Nino and weak global demand. Said that due to the strong fourth quarter, the pace of economic growth in 2022-23 has been 7.2 percent, which is more than the estimate of 7 percent in February 2023.
