Gang that targeted gynecologists and financiers, used to make extortion calls busted
Kalaburagi: Karnataka Police on Tuesday claimed to have solved the case of attempt to murder of a gynecologist in Kalaburagi with the arrest of two people. Investigation revealed that the accused had planned the crime to create terror among gynecologists, financiers of the state and extort huge amounts of money from them. The arrested accused have been identified as Sarfuddin and Kamaruddin.
Upon sustained questioning, he confessed to collecting details of all the successful gynecologists and financiers in the state to extort money. He targeted gynecologists who charged exorbitant fees and financiers who charged huge interest rates. The gang had planned to target Jayaprakash Patil, a well-known gynecologist from Kalaburagi. Patil was very active on social media and the accused thought that if he was targeted it would create a bad atmosphere among others. After closely monitoring Patil’s activities for a month, the gang made an extortion call in June. He spoke in Hindi and demanded that $30,000 be deposited into their accounts in the form of crypto currency.
When Dr Patil refused to pay the money, the accused threatened to kill him. On August 31, while traveling in a car, the doctor was stopped and then fired upon on the outskirts of the city, but he miraculously survived. IG Ballari Range Lokesh Kumar said that the accused wanted to earn name and money in the underworld. Since another gang was active in Kalaburagi, they chose Raichur to commit the crime.
Sarfuddin was an expert in crypto currency matters. A country-made pistol was purchased from another state to commit the crime. He told that the accused had opened fire with the intention of killing Dr Patil. Raichur Rural Police had registered a case in this regard. The accused had fired bullets at his car but fortunately the bullets hit the bonnet of the car.
