GCC sent relief material to Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli
CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Tuesday sent relief material and motor pumps to pump out rainwater in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts, which were hit by heavy rains that caused floods. At least 23 engineers of the Municipal Corporation went to these two districts for relief work.
“There has been heavy rain in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu for the last two days, causing floods. Residents are in need of essentials as they are stranded in rain water. We have sent relief material to Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts. Start “At least 77 motor pumps have been sent, including 12 diesel pumps above 100 HP motor pumps, 29 diesel motor pumps below 50 HP and 30 electric motor pumps,” said Mayor R Priya, who visited Ripon on Tuesday. The relief material vehicle was flagged off in the building.
Besides this, relief material including bread, biscuits, milk powder, drinking water bottles and blankets have been sent to the affected people by two vehicles and a naval helicopter. The local body made arrangements to send the material based on the requirements.
“Four teams of 16 members led by 4 executive engineers in the Mechanical Engineering Department of Chennai Corporation. A team of 7 members led by an executive engineer from the Electricity Department have been sent to Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli for relief operations.”
Meanwhile, since garbage removal has largely come under control, other issues including repair of potholes and improvement of top slabs and manhole covers should be given top priority, Corporation Commissioner J Radhakrishnan instructed officials.
Radhakrishnan said, “Visible presence, resolution of issues, coordination with Metro Jal Board on sewage and water supply issues, clearing of remaining vacant land of water/garbage and bushes and also issuing notices to such owners and imposing severe fines.” “Also, our focus is on dilapidated houses and under-construction buildings to ensure that proper safety measures are taken to avoid accidents,”
Bus Route Road Department officials have been directed to address potholes and damaged road surface at major junctions and internal roads. Delay in work will lead to criticism of the condition of the road surface.
