Goa News: Due to stoppage of baling of plastic waste, garbage got piled up in Sada plant
Vasco: After the baling of plastic waste was stopped, a pile of waste has formed in the waste treatment plant of Mormugao Municipal Council located in Sada. An excavator has been pressed into service to create more space to accommodate the new waste. It is necessary to balance the existing waste before using more capacity than the plant can handle. About 30 tonnes of waste is generated in the municipal corporation area, of which 13 tonnes is dry waste and 17 tonnes is wet waste. The wet waste is taken to the waste treatment plant in Saligao, while the plastic from the dry waste is sent to cement companies after the baling process. The baling contract was awarded to an individual who planned to separate plastic bottles, cans, cardboard and other reusable materials from waste for the purpose of selling. However, garbage collection workers have started keeping the reusable materials with them as the contractor has refused to continue the work saying it is incurring losses. After this, MMC sent its sanitation workers for bulling. However, due to shortage of manpower, the civic body cannot send staff for bail on a regular basis. Therefore, the baling work in the plant has come to a standstill for the last 14 days. It is noteworthy that BITS Pilani had provided a baling machine capable of processing 5 tonnes of dry waste. But due to lack of maintenance the machine broke down.
