Government extends internet suspension till November 5 amid violence

Imphal: The Manipur government has decided to extend the suspension of mobile data and internet services in the northeastern state by an additional five days. The move comes in response to a resurgence of violence after a brief period of relative peace. The order for this extension was issued by Manipur Home Commissioner T. Ranjit Singh, who cited various incidents as the reasons for the continued ban on internet access.

The order highlights several factors contributing to the decision, including public protests against the deployment of central security forces, public gatherings in local clubs and efforts to reach the residences of elected officials and civil society organization (CSO) leaders. Includes reports. The government is concerned that these incidents may increase and some individuals with malicious intentions may exploit social media platforms to share photographs, hate speech and hate video messages that may further inflame public sentiment. Such actions are likely to seriously disrupt the law and order situation in Manipur.

The order emphasizes that, in order to maintain public order, mobile internet and data services in the territorial jurisdiction of Manipur will remain suspended for an additional five days with immediate effect. Legal action will be taken against those who violate this order.

While the state was slowly returning to normalcy, there was a fresh outbreak of violence with the tragic killing of Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Chingtham Anand Kumar by armed persons on Tuesday. The attack took place when he was on duty and monitoring preparations for a helipad construction project in collaboration with the police and Border Security Force (BSF) at Eastern Shine School.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Expressing deep grief over the brutal murder of SDPO Chingtham Anand, Biren Singh said that his commitment towards service and security of the people will be remembered. The government is committed to bringing the criminals to justice.

Amid these developments, the Manipur Police detained a large number of persons, a total of 2,194, from various districts of the state for their alleged involvement in violations of law. The situation in Manipur remains tense, and the government’s decision to extend the internet suspension reflects the ongoing challenges in maintaining peace and order in the region.
