Government is strict on the username feature of WhatsApp, Meta submitted the reply to the notice; investigation ongoing

New Delhi: The ongoing dialogue between the central government and Meta regarding WhatsApp’s proposed “username” feature has intensified. Meta has submitted its official position in response to the government’s notice. According to sources, the company’s response is under scrutiny by the relevant ministries and authorities, and further action or decisions will be taken based on that.
This issue has come to light at a time when cases of cybercrimes such as digital fraud, phishing, fake identities, and so-called “digital arrests” are steadily increasing. The government believes that if the new feature is implemented without necessary security measures, it could make it easier for cybercriminals to target people.
Government sent notice
Last week, the central government issued a formal notice to Meta. This notice raised several important questions regarding WhatsApp’s proposed username feature. The government had specifically expressed concern that allowing users to communicate solely through usernames could lead to increased fraudulent identities.
The government stated in the notice that this feature could increase online fraud, phishing attacks, digital-arrest scams, impersonation, and cybercrime through fake profiles. Therefore, a detailed review of the feature’s security aspects is necessary before implementing it.
Meta Responds
According to sources, Meta has submitted a response to the government’s notice. In its response, the company provided information on various aspects of the proposed feature’s operation, security measures, and user protection. However, the detailed content of the response has not been made public.
Government sources say that the relevant authorities are studying the company’s response. If necessary, additional information or clarifications may be sought from Meta. The government’s objective is to ensure that any new feature does not adversely impact users’ security and digital trust.
What is WhatsApp’s username feature?
WhatsApp’s proposed username feature is being developed to allow users to connect and communicate with others without sharing their mobile number. Currently, contacting someone on WhatsApp requires their mobile number.
Under the new feature, users will be able to choose a unique username, which will be used to contact them. This feature will provide an alternative method of sharing identities, similar to social media platforms, and could help maintain the privacy of mobile numbers.
The Government’s Key Concern
While this feature is considered useful from a privacy perspective, the government states that if its security measures are not robust enough, cybercriminals could easily defraud people by creating fake usernames.
According to experts, cases of fraud by impersonating bank officials, police officers, government agencies, or relatives have increased sharply in recent years. Without a robust identity verification system, the possibility of an increase in such cases cannot be ruled out.
Launch currently on hold
In its notice, the government clearly instructed Meta not to launch this feature until the necessary consultations and satisfactory discussions with the government on the matter are completed.
The objective is to ensure that all potential security risks are assessed before the feature is implemented and that users’ interests are adequately protected.
Increasing Focus on Cybersecurity
Digital payments and online services have expanded rapidly in India in recent years. This has also led to a significant increase in cybercrime cases. The government is continuously emphasizing the development of robust mechanisms to protect users from digital platforms.
Experts believe that while new digital features offer convenience to users, they also require robust security standards, identity verification, and grievance redressal mechanisms.
What’s next?
The government will now take a further decision after reviewing Meta’s response. If the government deems the security measures adequate, the feature may be approved subject to the necessary conditions. However, if concerns remain about certain aspects, the company may be asked to implement additional changes or security provisions.
At present, WhatsApp’s username feature has not been launched in India. Discussions are ongoing between the government and Meta, and a final decision will be made keeping security, privacy, and user interests in mind.
