Hearing was held in the Supreme Court in the Manipur viral video case. During this, CJ DY Chandrachud said, not the only incident
A hearing was held in the Supreme Court on Monday in the Manipur Viral Video case. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said during the hearing that this matter came to light after the video surfaced, but this is not the only incident where women have been assaulted or harassed. CJI said that we should not wait for any other video. The affidavit filed by the Center shows that there are many other cases of sexual harassment. We also have to set up a mechanism to deal with violence against other women. Not only these three women, but there should be a system for every woman who is a victim of crime. He also asked how many such FIRs have been registered since May 3, when the violence started in Manipur.
‘Women do not want CBI probe’
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the aggrieved women of Manipur, said that the women are against the CBI probe into the matter and transfer of the case to Assam. At the same time, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the government, says that we have never requested to transfer the case to Assam. We have said that this case should be transferred out of Manipur.
‘Police took women to the protesters’
Kapil Sibal also said that the statements show that it was the police who had taken both the women to the protestors, they were left with the crowd. One woman’s father, and brother were killed. Still the bodies have not been found. Zero FIR was registered on 18th May. When the court took cognizance, something happened. Then how can you be sure? We want an agency which is independent to investigate the matter.
‘No objection to the supervision of the Supreme Court’
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the government, said that the Center has no objection if the Supreme Court monitors the matter. At the same time, senior advocate Indira Jaising told the Supreme Court that according to the status report of the Center, 595 FIRs have been registered. There is no clarity on how many of these are related to sexual violence and how many are related to arson, murder.
CBI is investigating
Significantly, the CBI has already investigated the Manipur viral videos. The video of the incident of two women being paraded naked in the state went viral on 19 July. This incident is being severely criticized across the country.
