Heavy rain in Tamil Nadu, possibility of more rain in the coming days
Chennai: Parts of Tamil Nadu, especially the coastal districts including Chennai, continued to receive heavy rain on Tuesday. Due to the cyclonic circulation over the coastal region of Tamil Nadu, continuous rain is expected to continue for the next few days.
DGP office and Ponneri in Chennai district received 9 cm rainfall, the highest rainfall recorded in the state in the last 24 hours.
The upper air cyclonic circulation over Comorin area and another circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal near Tamil Nadu coast have merged with the trough over west central Bay of Bengal. Therefore, heavy rains have been predicted in coastal districts like Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Theni, Dindigul, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai. There is a possibility of light to moderate rain at other places this week.
The weather department has issued an orange alert for three districts – Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.
Widespread rainfall continues in Chennai and suburbs since Monday. This led to waterlogging on internal roads of the city including Puttalam, Korukupet, Korattur and Thiruvotriyur. The Regional Meteorological Center has predicted moderate to heavy rain in some areas of the city for the next two days.
In the last 24 hours, Chennai Collector Office received 8 cm rainfall, followed by Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Ayanavaram and Anna University with 7 cm rainfall. Several areas of the city, including Manali, Sholinganallur, Ambattur, Villivakkam, Puzhal and Perungudi, recorded 2 to 6 cm rainfall following intense rain on Monday.
Meanwhile, in view of the intense rains, the Chennai Corporation conducted inspections in water-logging areas and immediately drained out rainwater in the city. Civic authorities also took note of other issues including sewage overflowing, falling of tree branches and arranged additional motor pumps in low-lying areas to prevent water logging.
