High Court gives permission to take out protest rally in front of Abhishek Banerjee’s office
Kolkata: A single bench of Justice Jai Sengupta of the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday set aside the Kolkata Police’s refusal to allow a protest rally by Trinamool Congress national general secretary and party Lok Sabha member Abhishek Banerjee in front of the office at Camac Street in Kolkata. done. They have planned to take out a rally on Wednesday against West Bengal government employees not getting increased dearness allowance. After not getting permission from the police, the organizers of the rally, who are state government employees in Group-D category, approached Justice Sengupta’s bench for permission.
Hearing the case on Tuesday, lawyers for petitioners Kaustav Bagchi and Preeti Kar argued that in denying permission to take out the rally through Camac Street, the police had cited inconvenience to school children traveling through that busy route. . Bagchi said, “Originally the rally was planned in Kalighat area. But after the appeal of the city police in this regard, the organizers changed their course. Then they planned a rally through the alternative route of Camac Street. Now the police is also opposing it by making the excuse of problem of school children. Is the administration’s objection because the office of a particular person is located on that part of the road? My clients will rally peacefully.
Ultimately, Justice Sengupta rejected the administration’s denial of permission and ruled that the rally could be held through Camac Street only. He said that since there is no school on that stretch of the road, the reason of inconvenience to school children cited by the administration is not tenable. Justice Sen Gupta ordered, “So the rally can be organized from that road without causing inconvenience to the school children. If needed, the rally can pass through a special channel through that road. The rally should proceed without stopping on that road.”
