Huge fireworks display on Diwali night: How many cases registered? , MP asked questions to the police
New Delhi: Following Diwali festivities, Trinamool Congress Member of parliament Saket Gokhale has penned a letter to a Delhi Police official, requesting information on the volume of cases filed in connection with firecracker usage in the national capital. The detonation of firecrackers has been widely criticized by numerous politicians and citizens, citing a breach of the Supreme Court’s ban on such activities.
Addressing the Joint Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, Gokhale highlighted the Supreme Court’s directive imposing a complete prohibition on the sale and utilization of fireworks in Delhi. On the eve of Diwali, observed on November 12, widespread firecracker displays were reported across the city.
Gokhale emphasized that the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi had registered a decrease to approximately 120 on November 11, attributed to rainfall. However, on the subsequent night of November 12, the AQI soared beyond the 999 mark (indicating hazardous conditions), primarily attributed to firework emissions, according to the Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP.
Asserting that adherence to Supreme Court directives is the responsibility of the Home Ministry via the Delhi Police, Gokhale interrogated the law enforcement agency. He inquired about the total count of cases filed against individuals or groups for engaging in fireworks across all districts of Delhi Police on November 12 and November 13.
Additionally, Gokhale sought information on the total number of cases filed against individuals or groups involved in the illegal sale of fireworks in all Delhi Police districts between November 8 and November 13. Concluding the letter, he emphasized the public significance of the matter and urged the Delhi Police to furnish the requested information within five days of receiving the letter.
