IIT student found hanging in hostel room
Paschim Medinipur (ANI): An IIT-Kharagpur student was found hanging in his hostel room on Wednesday, police said. He was a fourth year student of the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur, West Bengal. Police said.
According to the police, the deceased has been identified as K Kiran Chandra of the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Kharagpur.
The deceased is a resident of Medak district of Telangana.
The father of the deceased said, “Why is there so much tension among the students in IIT? He was under stress because of a project.”
A statement issued by IIT Kharagpur said the student “chose the path of self-harm”, while police said they were investigating the matter.
“With a feeling of complete shock, the students, staff and faculty members of IIT Kharagpur deeply condole the sudden demise of Kiran Chandra, a fourth year dual degree student in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He was the boarder of Lal Bahadur Shastri. (LBS) Hall of Residence and chose the path of suicide on the night of October 17, 2023,” the statement said.
The institute said the deceased was in the hostel room with his two roommates and an hour after the other two students left, Chandra was found hanging in his room. He was taken to BC Roy Technological Hospital where he was declared brought dead.
“By around 7:30 pm, K Kiran Chandra was in his hostel room with his two roommates. Later, the other two students went on to pursue academic activities. Subsequently, at around 8.30 pm, fellow boarders of LBS Hall found their rooms locked. Inside. The door was forced open and he was found hanging. Security and other students immediately brought him to BC Roy Technology Hospital. Despite all the efforts of the doctors, Kiran was declared dead at around 11:30 pm,” the institute said.
Police are investigating the case of unusual death to find out the cause of death. (ANI)
