IMD celebrates 150th anniversary at Aeronautical Meteorological Centre, Lakhimpur
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) celebrated its 150th anniversary. The 150th anniversary of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) was celebrated at Lilabari Airport in Lakhimpur district of Assam along with other parts of the country. The anniversary was celebrated at the Aviation Meteorological Center at Lilabari Airport. As part of the programme, some students from schools around the center were invited and they were given information about various activities of the Meteorological Department. The students were also introduced to the equipment.
The scientists of the Center also conduct special programs to attract the student community in this regard. Scientists informed the students about the glorious history of the department. Retired officers and employees of the department were also invited and honored. Out of the six regional offices of the Indian Meteorological Department, the weather station of Lilabari Airport in Lakhimpur is under the Guwahati Regional Office. The 150th anniversary of the Indian Meteorological Department was celebrated at the center by meteorologist Pankaj Barpathragohain, scientific assistants Ashish Dwivedi and Ajit Kumar Singh.
The department is under the Ministry of Geology, Government of India. The department is working in various fields ranging from agriculture to aviation. The India Meteorological Department is the lead government agency of the Government of India for all weather and climate services. The department works under the Ministry of Geology and is headquartered at ‘Moucham Bhawan’, Lodhi Road, New Delhi. The Indian Meteorological Department employs more than 4,000 scientists and staff. It is headquartered in Delhi and works in coordination with 6 regional meteorological centers serving different parts of the country. This department is celebrating its 150th anniversary.
