IMD issues red alert for thunderstorm and hailstorm in Delhi

Delhi: The weather in Delhi took a sudden turn late Sunday evening, prompting a red alert for the possibility of a severe thunderstorm and hailstorm. Meanwhile, some parts of the national capital have been placed on an orange alert. The administration and the Meteorological Department have advised people to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during the inclement weather.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi is likely to experience a severe thunderstorm accompanied by lightning, hail, dust storms, and light rain. Wind speeds could reach 80 kilometers per hour in some areas, which is expected to disrupt normal life.
The Meteorological Department has clarified that a red alert means “take action,” meaning a situation in which people should immediately take safety measures and avoid unnecessary travel. People in areas under an orange alert have also been advised to exercise caution and monitor the weather changes.
Strong winds and hailstorms are expected to cause trees to fall, disrupt power supply, and disrupt traffic. The administration has put relevant departments on alert to prepare for any emergencies.
The IMD stated that this change in weather is due to a suddenly developing weather system, which has created unstable conditions in Delhi and surrounding areas. Light to moderate rain may also be recorded in some areas, leading to a temporary drop in temperatures.
The administration has appealed to people to stay indoors, avoid open spaces, and seek shelter in safe places during bad weather. People are also advised to stay away from trees, power poles, and weak structures.
Traffic police have also been instructed to remain vigilant to ensure smooth traffic flow in case of any emergency. Airport and railway services are also being monitored for the impact of the weather.
This sudden change in weather in Delhi has disrupted people’s daily routines, and the administration is continuously monitoring the situation. The Meteorological Department has advised caution for the next few hours.
