Inquiry ordered into ‘wrong blood transfusion’ at DHH in Gajapati
Paralakhemundi: An investigation has been initiated following an alleged incorrect blood transfusion that endangered the life of a patient at the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Odisha’s Gajapati on Wednesday.
Sources revealed that Venkateswar Behera required a transfusion due to blood loss resulting from hemorrhoids. “He received blood transfusions on both Monday and Tuesday. Following the doctor’s recommendation, I procured O positive blood from the blood bank and submitted it to the hospital again on Wednesday. However, due to an error by the staff nurse, the wrong blood type was administered, leading to a deterioration in his condition,” shared his brother with the media.
The doctor subsequently administered an injection, and the patient’s condition is reported to be stable now, he added.
Dr. Pramod Panda, Deputy Superintendent of the hospital, confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the incident. “I was informed by the Chief District Medical Officer last night regarding the mismatch in blood groups. Instead of O positive, B positive blood was mistakenly administered to the patient. An inquiry is underway, and appropriate action will be taken against the staff nurse if negligence is established,” he stated.
