Interstate drug smuggling busted, drugs worth Rs 5 crore seized
Guwahati. Assam Police has busted an interstate drug smuggling ring in Karbi Anglong district and seized narcotics worth Rs 5 crore. At the same time, one person has been arrested on charges of drug smuggling.
According to the police, the consignment of drugs was coming from Manipur. A senior police officer said that after receiving a tip-off, security personnel stopped a car near Lahaurijan Chowki area of the district on Saturday night.
Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Kumar Saikia said, “After a thorough search of the vehicle, we recovered a huge quantity of drugs and arrested a smuggler, who is from Manipur.”
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the police operation and in a post on ‘X’ said that they had found 50 soap boxes containing 637.28 grams of heroin.
He wrote, “As part of the ongoing anti-drugs operation in Assam, Karbi Anglong Police stopped a vehicle coming from the neighboring state and recovered 637.28 grams of heroin kept in 50 soap boxes. The driver has been arrested in this regard.”
A top Assam Police official said that as per the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) guidelines, the total value of the seized drugs would be around Rs 5 crore.
