Jal Jeevan Mission gains momentum; More than 73% houses connected to tap water supply
Shillong: In a significant progress towards achieving the objectives of Jal Jeevan Mission Scheme in Meghalaya, PHE Minister Marquis Marak announced that out of 6,51,412 targeted households, 4,80,039 households are now successfully connected to tap water supply. Has happened. Expressing optimism, Marak has set a target of 100 per cent implementation by March this year. Highlighting the challenges faced during implementation, especially in the Khasi Hills region, Mraka highlighted land disputes that initially hindered the establishment of the project. Opposition from landowners, especially regarding tank construction, and opposition to some dams posed obstacles. However, the minister assured that these issues have been resolved, although some projects are still delayed. The Khasi Hills region also faced power connection disruptions, which mainly affected pumping projects in Jaintia and East Khasi Hills. Marak plans to address the issue with the Chief Minister, stressing the need for collaboration with MEECL. Despite payment for connection, electricity connections are delayed due to the need for materials like poles and wires in remote locations. In a recent meeting with the Commissioner Secretary, Marak discussed project updates from sub-departments, intending to present them before the Chief Minister. Responding to complaints of no water supply in taps, Marak clarified that the pipes are laid only after the water reaches the treatment plant. “From the plant, it goes to the reservoir where pipes are distributed to homes,” Marak said. Highlighting future plans, the department secured approval for the Bulk Water Supply Scheme, a Rs 100 crore project to be launched in two years. Ganol has been identified as the water source for this important project, which aims to further enhance the water supply infrastructure in the area. As Meghalaya continues to make progress in water supply connectivity, the focus has been on overcoming the challenges and ensuring successful implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission Scheme to benefit the residents of the state.
