Karakoram International University students warn of massive protest campaign
Hunza PoGB: Students at the Hunza campus of Karakoram International University have threatened to launch a massive protest campaign if the government ignores their concerns. “If our demands are not heeded, we will intensify our protest. Take it seriously. Students of the Diamer campus are united with us,” said a student captured in a video posted by the Pamir Times.
KIU students are protesting the sudden decision to close some campuses. They were seen carrying signs and banners demanding fairness and accountability. “The Pakistani government shows hostility towards education, refuses to compromise on its unreasonable expenditures and often chooses to close schools and colleges. If our demands are ignored, we will be forced to take decisive steps” another protester told the Pamir Times.
Students at KIU’s Diamer campus have been staging protests similar to those going on at the Hunza campus. These students, hailing from remote areas with aspirations for higher education, faced unexpected hurdles.
They protested against arbitrary fee hike and reported incidents of unnecessary harassment. The tension escalated further when the vice-chancellor announced the closure of the Diamer and Hunza campuses, citing inadequate government funding. This sudden decision left students disappointed, who were expecting opportunities from the university.
