Ponda: Locals have demanded expediting the road widening work on half a kilometer stretch of Kundam bypass, which started last year. The intention was to make the traffic two-way as per the demand of the local people to avoid the increasing number of accidents at the village doorstep.
Following a series of fatal and horrific accidents at the accident prone area (black spot) at Kundam Manaswada Junction last year, local people staged a road jam (Rasta Roko Andolan) demanding widening of the Kundam bypass and introduction of two-way traffic. did. Bypass and diverting heavy vehicles on bypass. After this, the National Highway authorities started the road widening on a distance of half a kilometer in May 2023, which was progressing slowly.
Kundam Sarpanch Survesh Gaude said that following the demand of local people, NH officials have started the work of bypass widening. While he appreciated the authorities for starting the work, he said that the authorities need to speed up the road widening work and complete it as soon as possible.
Vijesh Naik, a local from Kundam, said he had seen four to five fatal accidents during the last few years and many before that too. He said the authorities need to expedite the bypass work so that the traffic can be diverted to the two-way bypass road and the accident-prone Kundam Manaswara Junction can become an accident-free zone.
