Lucknow: The new UP winners are young, educated and eager

Lucknow: The half-a-dozen winning candidates in the Lok Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh are a welcome change from the stereotypical image of a politician. They are well-educated, speak fluent English, have degrees from prestigious institutions and have fresh ideas about their role as new MPs. After obtaining a degree in accounting and management from Queen Mary University of London, he contested from Kaushambi on a Samajwadi Party ticket and won by a margin of 1.03 lakh votes. He defeated two-time BJP MP Vinod Sonkar. His father Indrajit Saroj is a member of the UP Assembly. “I want to focus on the development of my constituency and will make a conscious effort not to get involved in local politics,” he said after winning the election. Similarly, Samajwadi Party’s Iqra Hasan won the Kairana seat by a margin of 69,116 votes.

27-year-old Iqra has a postgraduate degree in international law from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. “My priority will be to work for my constituency, especially women, who are still backward and do not have adequate educational facilities,” she said. 25-year-old Supreme Court lawyer Priya Saroj also achieved electoral success by winning the Machhlishahr seat on an SP ticket by 35,850 votes.

She is the daughter of former MP Toofani Saroj.

Anand Gond, fielded by the BJP from Bahraich, has an MBA, PhD degree. He won his seat by 64,227 votes and is the son of outgoing MP Akshaywar Lal Gond. Ujjwal Raman Singh, who won the Allahabad seat on a Congress ticket, has degrees from St Stephen’s and Delhi University Law School. He won by 58,795 votes. Shashank Mani Tripathi, who won from Deoria on a BJP ticket, is a B.Tech from IIT Delhi and has an MBA degree from IMD Lausanne. He won by 34,842 votes.
