Mahabharata Circuit to be expanded; Uttarakhand and Rajasthan to jointly boost religious tourism.

With the aim of giving a new direction to religious and cultural tourism, the BJP governments of Uttarakhand and Rajasthan are set to launch a joint initiative to expand the ‘Mahabharata Circuit’. In this context, Uttarakhand’s Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj met Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma in Jaipur on Tuesday. The two leaders held detailed discussions regarding the conservation and development of historical and religious sites linked to the Mahabharata era and connecting them for tourism purposes.
During the meeting, Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj noted that the Pandavas had traversed various regions of Uttarakhand and Rajasthan during their periods of exile (Vanvas) and incognito exile (Agyatvas). These sites continue to hold immense religious, historical, and cultural significance today. Developing these locations into a comprehensive tourism circuit would allow pilgrims and tourists from within the country and abroad to better acquaint themselves with Indian culture and the legacy of the Mahabharata.
Satpal Maharaj stated that the Mahabharata is not merely a religious text but a vital foundation of Indian history, culture, and faith. Many sites associated with it remain centers of public faith. Developing these locations and equipping them with modern tourism amenities is the need of the hour. This initiative would not only boost religious tourism but also create new employment and self-employment opportunities for local residents.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma also acknowledged the importance of this initiative, noting that the state is home to numerous historical and mythological sites linked to the Mahabharata era. He remarked that integrating these sites with key religious and historical locations in Uttarakhand to create a comprehensive Mahabharata Circuit could establish a distinct identity on the country’s tourism map. He also emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation between the two states in the tourism sector.
The meeting also addressed the development of basic amenities at sites included in the Mahabharata Circuit. Plans were discussed to provide facilities such as improved road connectivity, tourist information centers, signage, parking, sanitation, drinking water, accommodation, and digital information systems. The objective is to ensure a superior experience for pilgrims and tourists during their visits.
Tourism experts believe that religious and heritage tourism is rapidly gaining popularity in India. Much like the Char Dham, Ramayana Circuit, Buddhist Circuit, and Krishna Circuit, the Mahabharata Circuit could also become one of the country’s major religious tourism projects. If Uttarakhand and Rajasthan collaborate on this initiative, both states stand to gain significant benefits in the tourism sector.
During the meeting, an agreement was reached to enhance cooperation between the two states in the fields of tourism, culture, and heritage conservation. Officials may be directed to compile a list of sites associated with the Mahabharata era and conduct a detailed study of their historical, religious, and tourism significance. A future action plan will be formulated based on these findings.
The expansion of the Mahabharata Circuit is expected to give fresh impetus to both religious and cultural tourism. Tourists from within the country and abroad will be able to gain firsthand insight into Indian civilization, history, and mythological traditions through these sites. This initiative will also boost local handicrafts, traditional arts, the hospitality industry, transport services, and other tourism-related businesses.
Experts believe that if this project is implemented systematically with the collaboration of central and state governments, it could emerge as a major attraction for religious tourism in the coming years. Uttarakhand is already renowned nationwide for the Char Dham Yatra and spiritual tourism, while Rajasthan holds a prominent place on the global tourism map due to its historical heritage, forts, palaces, and cultural legacy. Currently, preliminary discussions regarding the expansion of the Mahabharata Circuit have commenced. In the near future, the tourism departments of both states will draft a comprehensive action plan. Subsequently, concrete steps are likely to be taken toward developing and preserving key sites linked to the Mahabharata era and equipping them with modern tourism amenities. The governments believe that this initiative will not only provide renewed recognition to the nation’s cultural heritage but also play a pivotal role in strengthening tourism and the local economy.
