Major decision by the Delhi government: 3 new state-of-the-art residential colonies to be built for government employees.

New Delhi. The Delhi government is set to take a major and ambitious step towards providing better residential facilities for its officers and employees. Three new, modern, and fully equipped residential colonies for staff will soon be developed in the national capital.

The first and largest of these colonies will be built in Gulabi Bagh (North Delhi), the second in Kalyan Vas (East Delhi), and the third in the Bahapur area (South-East Delhi). The implementation of this entire plan will not only provide modern housing to government employees but also significantly boost the capacity of the Delhi government’s housing pool in the capital.

Construction in Three Key Areas

Blueprints for these three residential colonies, to be constructed under the supervision of the Public Works Department (PWD), have been finalized. The three projects are located in different parts of Delhi:

  • Gulabi Bagh (North Delhi): This will be the largest colony, spanning a vast area of approximately 70 acres. Multi-story buildings will be constructed here to accommodate thousands of employees across various categories (Type-1 to Type-4).
  • Kalyan Vas (East Delhi): Spread across approximately 30 acres, this colony will be developed as a modern township featuring amenities such as sports facilities, parks, and parking for employees.
  • Bahapur (South-East Delhi): A special residential complex is being constructed on approximately four acres of land in Bahapur, a prime location in South-East Delhi.

160 Flats for IAS Officers in Bahapur

A crucial component of this plan is the Bahapur project in South-East Delhi. Housing for top administrative officers of the Delhi cadre will be constructed on approximately 4 acres of land in Bahapur.

Under the proposed plan, a total of 160 premium flats—categorized as Type-5 and Type-6—will be built for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and senior officers. These flats will be equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, green building technology, advanced security systems, and ample parking space. The PWD has finalized the detailed architectural design and layout plan for the Bahapur project. Tender Likely to be Issued Next Week

Following the approval of designs at both administrative and technical levels, the paperwork for the construction work has now reached its final stage.

According to sources, the Public Works Department (PWD) may issue an official tender (e-tender) for the construction of the Bahapur project by next week. Once the tendering process is complete and a construction agency is selected, work will commence on the ground. The government has issued strict instructions to the department to complete this project within the stipulated timeframe.

Relief from Dilapidated Buildings; Enhanced Amenities

Currently, the Delhi government faces a severe shortage of government housing relative to the number of its employees. Furthermore, several existing colonies—such as those in Gulabi Bagh—had long been in a dilapidated state, posing persistent maintenance challenges.

The construction of new colonies will bring:

Safe and Modern Housing: Employees and officials will have the opportunity to reside in earthquake-resistant, multi-story buildings constructed using modern technology, replacing the old structures.

Reduction in Long Waiting Lists: The addition of new flats will significantly shorten the waiting list for employees who have been waiting years for government accommodation.

Green and Sustainable Model: Special emphasis will be placed on solar energy, rainwater harvesting, solid waste management, and green belts within these colonies.

Strengthening Delhi’s Infrastructure

This decision by the Delhi government extends beyond merely providing relief to employees; it will also accelerate urban redevelopment in the city. By adopting ‘vertical development’ (multi-story buildings) to replace old, low-rise structures, land can be utilized more efficiently.

According to PWD officials, a third-party audit mechanism will be implemented after the tender is issued to ensure transparency and quality in construction, thereby ensuring the project is handed over to employees within the scheduled timeframe.
