Major tragedy averted at Delhi airport, DGCA removes air traffic controller

New Delhi (IANS). A major accident was averted at the Delhi airport on Wednesday morning. Due to the mistake of the air traffic controller, two aircraft of the aviation company Vistaar reached the same runway. After this, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has removed the air traffic controller.

An official said immediate corrective action was taken as the tower controller immediately directed the Delhi-Bagdogra flight to cancel its take-off. However, sources told IANS on the condition of anonymity that the take-off was immediately aborted following instructions from the Air Traffic Control (ATC).

Flight UK725 from Delhi to Bagdogra was involved in the incident. The flight was initiating take-off from the recently inaugurated runway, while Vistara’s flight from Ahmedabad to Delhi was finishing its landing on the same runway, moving towards the end of the runway.

Sources said that it was around 8.30 am when the incident was reported. Both the flights were of Vistara. Flight UK725 was cleared by ATC to proceed, but the female captain of another flight, who was on the way to land, saw the flight preparing to take off on the same runway.

Later, the woman captain informed the ATC about it, which averted a major accident.
