Man carrying explosives dies in blast outside Brazil supreme court ahead of G20 summit

Brazil: On Wednesday, Brazil reported a tragic incident when a man with explosives tries to enter Brazil supreme court and died in blast. The incident occurred only three days before the G20 Summit scheduled for this Friday, which would attract many world leaders to town.

“This citizen approached the Federal Supreme Court, tried to get in, failed, and the explosion happened at the entrance,” Brasilia governor Celina Leao told the media.

Reportedly, the Supreme Court is located in the Praca dos Tres Poderes, together with the presidential palace and Congress.

Reports said that he blew up the explosives outside the court building. When the incident took place, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was out of the palace, and no other person got injured because of the attack.

It reportedly happened as two blasts occurred on the day. The first from a car on the street outside the courtroom at around 7:30 pm and then as he tried to force his way inside, the second blast, which was inside. No one is hurt but one, who is the accused, was killed. The Supreme Court said in a statement that two loud explosions rang out at the end of Wednesday’s session and that the judges were safely evacuated.

According to Sergeant Rodrigo Santos of the military police in the capital, police patrolling the area saw the vehicle was on fire and saw a man leaving the vehicle. Than a man tried to force himself into the court.

The tragic event that just unfolded days before the scheduled G20 summit meeting in Rio de Janeiro adds more pressure on security since heads of states of the top 20 economies will attend, including US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

After that summit, Xi will stay here, coming to Brasilia on next Wednesday for a state visit. The G20 leaders in Brazil increase security measures around the nation, particularly in Rio.

An uprising, on January 8, 2023, brought total shock to the seats of government in Brasilia, just a week after the polls revealed President Lula had defeated incumbent right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro. Thousands of angry followers of President Bolsonaro rushed into government buildings and caused havoc before authorities could reimpose control.

Brazilian authorities launched an investigation into the attack and a bomb squad from federal police has examined the area. Country’s solicitor general termed the blasts an “attack” .
