Man snatches Russian citizen’s phone, arrested

Mumbai: A foreign national’s mobile phone worth Rs 70,000 was snatched in Sakinaka on Tuesday night when she was trying to book an Uber to the airport. The thief, 20-year-old Ajay Sable, was arrested within hours.

According to police, 37-year-old Russian Nina Dmitre Zemenko took out her phone on 90 Feet Road to book a cab. Sable suddenly yanked the device and ran away. Jemneko immediately reached the police station and registered a case.

Police searched CCTV cameras of the area to catch the accused.

Sakinaka police started investigation and examined footage from 47 CCTV cameras. Since the theft took place at night, it was difficult to identify the faces of the accused. Police sought information from informants about eight people already accused in similar cases, which resulted in Sable’s identification.

According to investigation, Sable is a drug addict and has no fixed address. Police searched for him at auto rickshaw stands, railway and metro stations in Sakinaka, Kurla and Ghatkopar. A trap was laid four times before Sable was arrested. The phone that was snatched from him was recovered.

In another incident reported last week, Kurar police on December 7 arrested an auto-rickshaw driver Shivprasad Yadav (41) for allegedly stealing a bag containing 12 tola gold. 6 lakhs. The bag belonged to a passenger traveling in his auto. Police confiscated all the gold jewelery and his auto.

According to the police, on November 11 at 6 pm, Sonal Bhosale (40) hired an auto-rickshaw from Sanjay Gandhi National Park to Laxmi Nagar, Malad East. It was raining and she had two small children with her. On reaching Lakshmi Nagar, she got down from the auto, unable to handle both the children in the rain. The auto driver immediately took the auto away, and realized his bag contained 12 tola gold, worth Rs. 6 lakh rupees were missed. He did not see the number of the auto.

Despite waiting for two days, she expected the auto driver to return her bag, but he did not. Eventually, he lodged a case under section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code at the Kurar police station.
