Mizoram Assembly elections: 174 candidates including 16 women in the fray
Aizawl. A total of 174 candidates, including 16 women, have filed their nominations for the assembly elections to be held on November 7 in Mizoram.
The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), opposition Congress and local party Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) have fielded candidates on all 40 assembly seats, an election official said on Saturday.
BJP has fielded its candidates on 23 seats and Aam Aadmi Party on 4 seats. Whereas, 27 independent candidates are also in the electoral fray.
State unit presidents of most of the political parties – Chief Minister Zoramthanga (MNF), Lalsawta (Congress), Lalduhoma (ZPM), Vanlalhamuka (BJP) are contesting this election.
MNF supremo Zoramthanga is contesting again from Aizawl East-1 seat. BJP state chief Vanlalhamuka Dampa and Congress Mizoram unit chief Lalsawta are in the fray from Aizawl West-3 constituency. ZPM president Lalduhoma is contesting re-election from Serchhip seat.
Out of 11 districts of Mizoram, maximum 55 candidates are contesting on 12 seats in Aizawl district, while minimum three candidates are contesting on the only seat in Hanathiyal district.
October 20 (Friday) was the last date for filing nominations, while Monday is the last date for withdrawal of nominations. A total of 209 candidates, including 18 women, had contested the last assembly elections in 2018.
In the last election, out of 209 candidates, the deposits of 81 male candidates and 16 female candidates were forfeited.
