MPMRCL has issued a safety advisory, but remains silent on ‘passenger insurance’.

Madhya Pradesh: The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) and Bhopal Metro issued a safety advisory on Thursday, assuring passengers of safe travel within the metro premises. However, they remained silent on the issue of passenger accident insurance, even after questions were raised by Free Press regarding the lack of insurance cover for daily commuters.
The advisory was issued following a report published by Free Press on Thursday, titled “Taking the Metro? Beware—No Accident Insurance Cover for Passengers,” which highlighted that more than 10,000 daily commuters were traveling on the Bhopal Metro without any accident insurance coverage included in their tickets. The report questioned how the metro administration was operating services without clearly defining responsibility in case of an accident.
This controversy has also reignited the debate over fares. According to official data from the Delhi Metro, a 14-kilometer journey from Okhla Vihar to Rajiv Chowk costs ₹43, while a much shorter 6.7-kilometer journey on the Bhopal Metro costs ₹40.
In its initial advisory, MPMRCL stated that passengers are under the supervision of metro staff within the metro premises and assured that safety and convenience are their top priorities. However, the statement did not mention any insurance coverage or compensation mechanisms for passengers in the event of accidents.
