Nagpur News: Did the temperature really reach 56 degrees Celsius? IMD clarifies
Nagpur: Two automatic weather stations (AWS) recorded temperatures of 54 and 56 degrees Celsius on Thursday, but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has clarified that these readings were due to sensor malfunction. “The report of 56 degrees Celsius temperature on May 30 is not correct and has not been officially declared. The nearest functioning AWS is at CICR, Nagpur and the maximum temperature on May 30 was 44 degrees Celsius,” the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Nagpur said in a statement. The Nagpur AWS, located in the middle of 24 hectares of open agricultural land belonging to PDKV at Ramdaspeth off North Ambazari Road, recorded a temperature of 56 degrees on Thursday.
The other AWS along with the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Sonegaon also recorded a temperature of 54 degrees. This is not the first time there has been a dispute over temperature records. Earlier, a weather station in Delhi had recorded a temperature of 52.9 degrees Celsius. However, IMD officials later clarified that the record-breaking temperature was due to “error in the sensor or local factor”.North India is reeling under a scorching heat, with twelve people dying of suspected heat stroke in Odisha’s Sundergarh in the last 24 hours, as reported by IANS news agency.The water level of 150 main reservoirs in the country has also fallen by 23 per cent, according to the Central Water Commission (CWC).Nagpur recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius on Friday, which is still higher than the average temperature for this time.
