NCW raised questions on police in case of harassment of women in West Bengal
Kolkata (IANS). National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Rekha Sharma on Tuesday questioned the role of police in the recent incident of harassment of two tribal women at Pakua Haat in West Bengal’s Malda district.
The NCW team, which reached West Bengal under the leadership of Women’s Commission Chairperson Rekha Sharma, reached Pakua Haat on Tuesday afternoon and spoke to the local police officers in the matter.
Rekha Sharma directly questioned the police officers as to why the police arrested the victims.
The Chairperson of the Commission for Women said, “Is the police just a puppet? Why won’t they do a fair investigation into the matter? Both the victims were in police custody for six days and the police failed to realize that they had made a false arrest. Why are the police officers responsible not arrested? Who will return those six days to the aggrieved tribal women?”
In its reply, the police said that a departmental inquiry has been initiated against the concerned police officials.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Azharuddin Khan assured the NCW team that if the departmental inquiry proves that the police officers concerned are at fault, action will definitely be taken against them.
