New avenues for mineral wealth to open in Bihar; preparations for mining in Gaya and Rohtas intensify.

Patna. New activities in the mining sector have gained momentum in Bihar following the discovery of potential mineral wealth in areas previously known primarily for agriculture and traditional resources. Preparations for mining are advancing in identified major mineral blocks within the Gaya and Rohtas districts. Surveys have identified reserves of significant minerals—such as magnetite (an iron ore), rare metals, and glauconite—in these regions. This has raised hopes for the creation of new employment opportunities and the establishment of mineral-based industries in the state.
According to the Bihar Government’s Department of Mines and Geology, several major mineral blocks have been identified across various parts of the state. The department’s records highlight blocks containing magnetite, glauconite, vanadium-bearing magnetite-ilmenite, bauxite, limestone, as well as chromium, nickel, and platinum-group elements.
Potential for Magnetite and Rare Metals in Gaya
Mineral surveys in Gaya district have revealed the presence of magnetite (an iron ore) and rare metals. Consequently, the process of developing mineral blocks is being accelerated. Based on the survey findings, blocks have been identified in the Sapneri area of Khizersarai block and in the Lutua Gram Panchayat of Banke Bazar block, near Sherghati.
Magnetite is a crucial iron ore mineral. It has a high iron content and is utilized in the iron and steel industry. If commercial-scale mining of the identified reserves proves feasible, it could significantly benefit mineral-based industrial activities within the state.
The potential for rare metals in Gaya is also considered significant. There is a steadily growing demand for these critical minerals across sectors such as modern technology, energy, electronics, defense, and various industries. Thus, the availability of these resources in Bihar could hold strategic and economic importance for the state.
Glauconite Blocks in Rohtas
Preparations for mining activities are also intensifying in Rohtas district. Glauconite blocks have been identified in the Nawadih, Shahpur, Akbarpur, and Tipa areas within the Rohtas and Nauhatta blocks.
Glauconite is known as a potash-rich mineral and holds significance due to its potential applications in the agricultural sector. The Mines and Geology Department of the Bihar government has also highlighted several glauconite blocks in the Rohtas/Kaimur region. Furthermore, Bihar’s glauconite blocks have been included in the details regarding the auction of critical mineral blocks by the central government.
This has raised the prospects for expanding mineral-based activities in Rohtas. However, before commercial mining can commence in any block, several formalities must be completed, including detailed surveys, assessments of mineral quantity and quality, environmental clearances, and other statutory procedures.
Hopes Raised by 14 Mineral Blocks
Expectations within the government and the mining sector have risen regarding approximately 14 identified major mineral blocks in the state. These include strategic and critical minerals located across various districts. Discussions regarding preparations for the auction of these 14 mineral blocks in Bihar had also intensified around May 2026.
The state government has long been striving to scientifically assess Bihar’s mineral potential and utilize available resources for the state’s economic development. Government data also highlights revenue generation from the mining sector and the identification of new mineral blocks.
Potential Boost to Industry and Employment
The commencement of commercial activities in these mineral blocks is expected to increase local employment opportunities. Beyond mining itself, jobs could be generated in sectors such as transportation, machinery, processing, construction, services, and other ancillary industries. This is likely to strengthen the local economies of the respective districts.
However, alongside the economic benefits of mining, environmental conservation poses a significant challenge. Several areas in Gaya and Rohtas are ecologically sensitive, characterized by forests, hills, and natural resources. Therefore, mining activities must be pursued with due regard for environmental standards and local conditions. Focus on Environment and Local Interests
According to experts, a detailed study of environmental impact is essential before developing any mineral block for mining. Initiating large-scale mining without assessing the potential impact on water sources, forests, agricultural land, and the local population would not be advisable.
The participation of local people and the protection of their interests will also be crucial. If mining projects provide employment and basic amenities to the local population, the development can garner social support. At the same time, concerns regarding displacement, impacts on water sources, or environmental damage must be addressed transparently.
A New Chapter for Bihar’s Mineral Sector
The discovery of new minerals and the identification of blocks are being viewed as significant opportunities for Bihar’s industrial development. Recent reports have highlighted the potential for rare earth and strategic minerals in several districts of the state, including Gaya and Rohtas.
The most critical phase now involves assessing the actual mineral quantity and economic viability of these blocks, as well as completing the necessary statutory procedures. If survey results prove favorable for commercial mining and the required approvals are secured, Gaya and Rohtas could carve out a significant place on Bihar’s mineral map in the coming years.
