New rehabilitation policy for acid attack survivors
Lucknow. The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a significant step towards the rehabilitation of acid attack survivors and ensuring them a life of dignity. The government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has decided to implement a comprehensive assistance and rehabilitation policy for acid attack survivors. Under this new framework, survivors will be provided not only with immediate financial aid but also with facilities related to education, healthcare, housing, medical treatment, and self-reliance. The government aims to empower women and young girls who have fallen victim to acid attacks—socially, economically, and mentally—thereby enabling them to lead dignified lives.
According to an order issued by the Chief Secretary, a holistic rehabilitation system will be developed for acid attack survivors. This system will encompass immediate financial assistance following the incident, as well as arrangements for long-term medical treatment, rehabilitation, and social reintegration. The government believes that merely providing compensation is insufficient; it is equally crucial to connect survivors with long-term medical care, education, and employment opportunities.
The new policy places special emphasis on the comprehensive treatment of acid attack survivors. Six medical colleges across the state will be developed as ‘Centres of Excellence’ to provide specialized medical care to severely injured women. The plan is to offer plastic surgery, reconstructive surgery, skin treatment, mental health counseling, and other essential medical services under one roof at these institutions. This will spare survivors the ordeal of running from pillar to post for better treatment and ensure they receive timely, specialized medical care.
The government has also clarified that special provisions will be made to ensure the education of acid attack survivors is not disrupted. If a student’s education is interrupted due to the incident, every possible assistance will be provided to help her continue her studies. Additionally, scholarships, academic support, and other facilities may be provided where necessary, enabling survivors to complete their education and become self-reliant.
Financial assistance is also a key component of this new policy. Following an acid attack, many survivors become unable to work due to physical and mental trauma. Keeping this in mind, the government has decided to provide immediate financial assistance. Additionally, special emphasis will be placed on measures such as providing livelihood opportunities, skill development training, and facilitating self-employment during the rehabilitation process, enabling the victims to become financially self-reliant in the future.
The new policy also includes provisions for housing assistance. Victims requiring safe accommodation will be supported through relevant government schemes. The government aims to ensure that victims receive not only medical care but also the social security necessary for a safe and dignified life.
Experts believe that an acid attack is not merely a physical assault; it also has profound psychological and social repercussions. Such cases require long-term medical treatment, multiple surgeries, psychological counseling, and social rehabilitation. Consequently, the government’s new policy adopts a multi-dimensional approach, attempting to address every crucial aspect of the victim’s life.
Social organizations advocating for women’s rights have welcomed this government initiative. They state that effective implementation of the policy will offer new hope to acid attack victims, enabling them to live with dignity within the social mainstream. Experts have also suggested strengthening the systems for legal aid and psychosocial counseling alongside medical assistance.
