New Year’s Eve: From Zomato to Oyo, huge surge in orders and bookings on New Year’s Eve

New Delhi: Food delivery platforms like Zomato and Swiggy and instant commerce platforms like Blinkit and Zepto as well as hospitality major Oyo saw the highest ever orders and bookings on New Year’s Eve compared to previous years. Quick grocery and food delivery platforms witnessed huge orders as revelers preferred to stay at home to celebrate the New Year.

“We delivered almost the same number of orders on NYE 23 as we did on NYE 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 combined. Excited about the future!” Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal posted on X. Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa said that they crossed the total number of orders on NYE 2022 in the evening itself.

“We have already achieved the highest number of orders in a day, OPM (orders per minute), soft drinks and tonic waters sold in a day, chips sold in a day, tips given to riders in a day (Thank you India), Dhindsa informed.

“And it’s not slowing down! All systems and stores are working fine as of now,” he said.

Goyal posted that more than 3.2 lakh delivery partners of @zomato and @letsblinkit served India on New Year’s Eve.

A user from Lucknow placed an order worth Rs 33,683 on Blinkit, while a person from Kolkata placed an order worth Rs 48,950 on Swiggy Instamart.

“India is celebrating 2024 like never before,” Swiggy CEO Rohit Kapoor posted on Twitter.

“NYE 2024 breaks all records at Swiggy Food and Instamart! With the team at midnight – couldn’t be happier,” Kapoor posted along with a photo of his team at work.

A Swiggy spokesperson said that in preparation for the day, “we are working with restaurant partners to increase serviceability, stock up on Swiggy Instamart pods and ensure that our delivery fleet is at full strength”.

“We have also seen a significant increase in the number of year-end party bookings at Dineout. Dineout is also being used for reservations this year,” the spokesperson said.

Last year, India’s first unicorn Zepto said it had seen a definite increase in orders.

“We are privileged to serve 2.1 million more customers on our platform compared to the same period last year. 1.88 million monthly transacting users (MTU) in December 2022 compared to 4.04 million MTU in December 2023,” said Adit Palicha, co-founder and CEO of Zepto.

Oyo Founder and CEO Ritesh Agarwal said both domestic and international bookings increased on New Year’s Eve.

“Last minute plans are driving global tourism. “Between December 30th and 31st this year, we received 230k+ last minute bookings globally,” he posted on X.

Agarwal said Oyo received more than 620,000 bookings for New Year’s Eve in 2023.

“We are up 37 percent from last year due to increased last-minute bookings. Ayodhya saw a 70 per cent increase in the number of Oyo app users compared to Goa (50 per cent) and Nainital (60 per cent),” he informed.
