NGT formed panel on illegal bauxite mining, asked for this report
Jharkhand: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Lohardaga, Jharkhand has constituted a panel and asked it to submit a factual and action taken report on alleged illegal mining of bauxite. The NGT was hearing a petition that was filed following a media report on illegal bauxite mining in Lohardaga. Lohardaga is also called the ‘Bauxite Town’ of the country. A bench of NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Srivastava referred to news reports on “large-scale illegal mining of bauxite”, which was secretly transported in trucks with fake number plates.
The bench, also comprising judicial member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel, said in the recent order, “The news shows that an important issue related to compliance with environmental laws is involved.”
“We consider it appropriate to form a joint committee consisting of representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Member Secretary, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Member Secretary, Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board and representatives of the Division. Forest Officer (DFO) concerned,” the bench said.
It said that DFO will act as a nodal agency for coordination and compliance. “The committee will examine the issue and submit a fact-finding and action taken report before the Eastern Region Bench, Kolkata,” the tribunal said.
