New Delhi: India’s strength in the sea is going to be unmatched. In its first BrahMos firing at sea, the Indian Navy’s fresh indigenous guided missile destroyer Yard 12706 scored a ‘bulls eye’ on Wednesday. That means this missile has hit the target very accurately. This deadly missile is also called Imphal. This was the first test of the long-range BrahMos missile by a warship before it was commissioned.
Imphal is the third ship of the Indian Navy’s Visakhapatnam-class stealth-guided missile destroyers. It is an example of India’s capability in indigenous shipbuilding and is one of the most technologically advanced warships in the world. It is designed by the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) of the Indian Navy and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai.
The name Imphal commemorates the Indian soldiers who fought in the Battle of Imphal during World War II. It is a powerful and versatile ship equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors. The destroyer has an overall length of 164 meters and a weight of 7,400 tonnes. The statement said that through such exercises, the Navy wants to send a message that the Navy is ready to fight in any situation.
About 75% of the ship is equipped with indigenous equipment including medium-range surface-to-air missiles (BEL, Bangalore), BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles (BrahMos Aerospace, New Delhi), indigenous torpedo tube launchers. (Larsen & Toubro, Mumbai), indigenous anti-submarine rocket launcher (Larsen & Toubro, Mumbai) and 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount (BHEL, Haridwar).
Earlier, the Navy in collaboration with Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) on Tuesday conducted the first guided flight test of naval anti-ship missile from ‘Seeking 42B’ helicopter. The officers provided this information. “This test is an important step towards achieving self-reliance in specific missile technology,” the Navy wrote on ‘X’.
This missile was first tested in May 2022. An official statement issued after the first flight test said that several new technologies have been used in the missile, including an indigenously developed launcher for the helicopter.
