Odisha Assembly Speaker election: BJD names Pramila Mallik as its candidate

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) today named senior party leader and Binjharpur MLA Pramila Mallik as its candidate for the election of the Assembly Speaker.Election for the Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker will be held on September 22. If wins, Pramila Mallik will be the first woman Speaker of the Odisha Assembly. She is the current Revenue Minister.

The six-time MLA had contested the State assembly election for the first time in 1990 on a Janata Dal ticket. Later, she won the elections in 2000, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019 on the BJD ticket.

“I am grateful to honourable Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for reposing faith in women and selecting me as the first woman candidate for the Odisha Assembly Speaker election. I will try my best to run the Assembly in an impartial manner by taking everybody or every party together,” said Malik in her reaction. She will file her nomination papers for the Assembly Speaker election tomorrow.
