Odisha on alert due to possibility of increase in intensity of rain
Bhubaneswar: Districts in southern Odisha were on alert on Tuesday night as the intensity of rain was likely to increase due to the impact of severe cyclone Mihang that hit neighboring Andhra Pradesh, officials said.
The storm made landfall near Bapatla between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh in the afternoon, with maximum wind speed of 90 to 100 kmph and gusting to 110 kmph.
Light rain was recorded in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati and Kalahandi districts of Odisha till night and the intensity is likely to increase during the night, officials said.
“After hitting land, it is likely that the cyclone will move northwards and weaken until it becomes a pressure area,” he said.
Additional Special Support (CRS) Commissioner Gyan Das said, “The maximum rainfall recorded till late in the affected districts was only 50 mm.”
The district administration in Koraput said it is closely monitoring the situation and taking precautionary measures.
Koraput Collector Abdal said, “At present the situation is normal. Due to increase in intensity of rain in the next 24 hours, the administration has taken necessary precautionary measures to avoid any adverse incident.” .Ajtar.
The weather office has predicted heavy rain in the district from Wednesday to Friday.
Collector Swadha Dev Singh said, “Since more rain was predicted, field personnel were put on maximum alert.”
He said field personnel have the ability to quickly assess and report any damage caused to crops or homes.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea off the coast of Odisha till December 6.
Severe cyclonic storm Mihong made landfall between 12.30 and 14.30 pm, crossing the coast of Andhra Pradesh, due to which its worst impact was felt in Chennai and neighboring areas of Tamil Nadu on Monday.
