Odisha’s first computer navigation spine surgery
Bhubaneswar: A groundbreaking achievement was reached by a team of spine surgeons at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) as they successfully conducted Odisha’s inaugural computer navigation spine surgery, marking a significant milestone in delivering superior healthcare services to the region.
Dr. Jitendra Kumar Rout, a Senior Consultant in Orthopaedics and Spine Surgery at KIMS Super Specialty Hospital, spearheaded the team that executed this pioneering surgery. Dr. Rout highlighted, “The utilization of computer navigation in spinal surgery ensures precision, efficient time management, minimally invasive procedures, and substantially reduces potential complications for patients.”
In traditional spinal surgeries, the fixation of the spine often involves the use of numerous pedicle screws. Manually executing this process may lead to critical post-surgery complications, sometimes even resulting in fatalities. Medical literature suggests a potential error rate of 16 percent with manual pedicle screw fixation. However, with computer navigation spine surgery, this error percentage is nearly eradicated, enabling surgeons to observe the screw movement on a computer screen, thereby averting complications.
Explaining the intricacies of computer navigation spine surgery, Dr. Rout elucidated, “The procedure incorporates intra-operative computer tomography (CT) scan technology. This allows the surgical team to closely monitor each step via a digital monitor. The navigational assistance ensures superior outcomes for both the team and, ultimately, the patient.”
Dr. Rout further emphasized, “Whether addressing cervical, lumbar, or any segment of the spinal cord, computer navigation spine surgery facilitates error-free surgical interventions. At KIMS, we are eager to explore more intricate procedures utilizing this advanced technique, aiming to enhance patient care.”
Dr. Shaktimaya Mohapatra, Facility Director at KIMS Super Specialty and Cancer Centre, affirmed, “The adoption of computer navigation spine surgery positions KIMS at the forefront and can be applied across various surgical procedures, empowering our teams to deliver enhanced outcomes for our patients.”
Expressing gratitude, Dr. Achyuta Samanta, the founder of KIIT & KISS, commended the surgical team for their pioneering work using this innovative technique.
