Old Parliament Building Can Now Be Called ‘Samvidhan Sadan’: PM Modi Proposes New Name
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday suggested that the old Parliament building should now be named as “Samvidhan Sadan”. The new name of the old Parliament was announced by the Prime Minister during his goodbye speech. PM Modi mentioned that the dignity of the building where Parliament sessions have been held for the last 75 years should not go down by simply referring to it as the old building.
“I have a suggestion. Now, when we are going to the new Parliament, its (Old Parliament building) dignity should never go down. This should not be left just as the Old Parliament building. So, I urge that if you agree, this should be known as Samvidhan Sadan,” PM Modi said as the lawmakers bid goodbye to the old Parliament building.
“This old Parliament building was built with the sweat, hard work and money of our countrymen,” PM Modi said, adding, “We will go to the new Parliament building but the existing one will always inspire the coming generation.”
Following the announcement, the Prime Minister along with other MPs left the Central Hall of the Old Parliament building and moved towards the new building to proceed with the special session. The transition to the new Parliament commenced following a joint photo session at the old Parliament, where all the MPs assembled to be part of the historic moment.
New Sansad as ‘Parliament House of India’
Ahead of the scheduled proceedings, the Lok Sabha Secretariat on Tuesday, September 19, issued a gazette notification, designating the new Parliament building as the “Parliament House of India”.
“The Speaker, Lok Saba is pleased to notify the new building of Parliament situated in the precincts of the Parliament House on Plot Number 118, New Delhi, east of the existing Parliament House with Raisina Road to the south and Red Cross Road to the north, to be, hereon, designated as the Parliament House of India,” the notification read.
