Onion prices surge, centre imposes floor price on exports amid rising prices
New-Delhi: A rise in onion prices has been seen across India. The sudden increase has created problems among consumers. Onion rates have doubled in the Delhi-NCR region and this surge in prices may continue till December.
The central government on Saturday imposed a minimum export price (MEP) of $800 per tonne (Rs 67 per kg) on onion exports between October 29 and December 31 to ensure domestic availability.
India’s onion-trading hub, surged 58% in two weeks to Rs 38 a kg on Tuesday. Average prices in major onion producing districts of Maharashtra range between Rs 45 and Rs 48 per kg.
Many onion traders are blaming the sudden rise in onion prices due to short supply. According to various media reports, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs said that the increase in prices is a result of delayed arrival of fresh crop from major onion producing states i.e. Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
