Over 300kg of methamphetamine seized in Sydney
Sydney (IANS) | The Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Border Guard said on Wednesday that more than 300kg of methamphetamine had been seized in Sydney. The seized narcotics could have been sold as more than 3 million individual street deals and have an estimated value of more than $273 million, a joint statement said, Xinhua news agency reported.
The drugs were concealed inside a steel hydraulic press, which arrived in New South Wales state on 18 April on a ship. After drilling into the core of the hydraulic press, engineering experts identified a white substance inside the machinery.
The machinery was taken apart to uncover 79 circle-shaped blocks of methamphetamine. Methamphetamine causes extreme harm, said AFP Detective Sergeant Salam Jarika. An average of 33 people were admitted to hospital every day in Australia for methamphetamine-related incidents in 2020-21.
