Paving the way for the possibility of a new life, multiple organ donation in AIIMS in 72 hours
New Delhi (ANI): In an inspiring display of compassion and selflessness, two families have decided to donate their organs for their loved ones, paving the way for the possibility of a renewed life for others in need.
Dr. Aarti Vij, Professor-in-charge, ORBO, AIIMS, deeply appreciated the family’s selfless decision to donate the organ amidst the grief.
The recent multi-donor organ donation is the third such instance coordinated by ORBO in the last 72 hours. The seamless coordination of consultation, brain death certification and donor organ management was precisely executed by the dedicated team of treating physicians, transplant coordinators and consultants, neurosurgeons, anaesthetists, transplant team, administrators and forensic and police departments.
Shashi, a 48-year-old woman, met with a road accident in Noida on November 16, 2023.
This unfortunate incident happened when she fell from a two-wheeler. He was immediately taken to the nearest hospital in Noida. Due to the severity of his head injury, he was later referred to the Trauma Center of AIIMS for advanced medical management. Despite being provided the best medical care at JPNATC AIIMS, Shashi was declared brain dead on November 17, 2023.
The recovered organs were allocated through the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO). One kidney was allotted to RR Hospital, while the other kidney was allotted to AIIMS, New Delhi.
In the second case, two-year-old girl Divyanshi suffered a serious fall. Despite the heartbreaking circumstances, his family took the selfless decision to donate his organs. Notto allotted his heart to MGM Healthcare in Chennai, while his kidney was allotted to AIIMS. Additionally, his cornea was kept in the eye bank of AIIMS.
Organ Retrieval Banking Organization (ORBO) in collaboration with Delhi Traffic Police Department coordinated a green corridor to ensure rapid transportation of Divyanshi’s heart from AIIMS Trauma Center to IGI Airport, Delhi. This act of organ donation stands as a testament to the incredible capacity for compassion and generosity in the face of tragedy.
The coordination between the medical teams, ORBO, NOTTO and the various hospitals reflects their collective dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of people waiting for organ transplants.
“The medical fraternity expresses its deep gratitude to the families for their courageous decisions, and their actions stand as a testament to their enduring spirit of humanity,” Dr Vij said. (ANI)
