PIL demands payment of flood relief through bank accounts

Chennai: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Madras High Court (MHC), seeking payment of cash assistance through bank accounts to families affected by Cyclone Michong.

Plaintiff Ramadoss from Chennai said the Rs 6,000 cash assistance paid through ration shops could lead to gross malpractices. Individuals who were actually affected by the cyclone may be left out of the beneficiary list, so assistance should be distributed through bank accounts.

The litigants also welcomed the announcement of cash assistance to families whose livelihoods were severely affected due to the cyclone. However, the plaintiff argued to distribute cash assistance through bank accounts as the government was already depositing money to beneficiaries through bank accounts for various schemes, it would not be a big challenge for the state to distribute cash assistance. . Cyclone Michong caused torrential rains in the state capital and several thousand families were heavily affected as rainwater mixed with sewage flooded their homes. Some families lost their belongings and essentials in the floods, so the state announced a cash assistance of Rs 6000 to the affected families, which will be distributed through ration shops.
