PM Modi inaugurated Surat Diamond Exchange
Surat (IANS). Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the world’s largest office building, Surat Diamond Bourse, in Surat, Gujarat.
The event proved to be an important milestone for the diamond industry, as Surat is famous for producing 90 percent of the world’s diamonds.
In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the dynamism and growth of Surat’s diamond industry, and praised the Surat Diamond Bourse as a testament to India’s entrepreneurial spirit.
He emphasized that the exchange will act as a hub of trade, innovation and collaboration, thereby boosting the country’s economy and generating employment opportunities.
Surat Diamond Bourse is a comprehensive hub for over 65 thousand diamond professionals including cutters, polishers and traders. With a whopping 7.1 million square feet of floor space, it surpasses the Pentagon as the world’s largest office building.
The 15-storey complex of the Exchange, covering an area of 35 acres, has a unique design of nine interconnected rectangular structures radiating from a central ‘spine’.
After four years of construction work, the Surat Diamond Bourse is all set to welcome its first residents in November.
The Surat Diamond Bourse has over 4,700 office spaces, which can also serve as small diamond-cutting and polishing workshops. The building has 131 elevators and provides dining, retail, wellness and conference facilities for workers.
