Police shot drug smuggler fleeing from custody
Guwahati (IANS). A drug peddler was shot in the leg while trying to escape from police custody, officials in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district said on Thursday.
Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police Sanjib Kumar Saikia told IANS that we had arrested Shahid Hussain from Laharijan area of the district on Wednesday with a consignment of illegal drugs.
The criminal tried to escape from police custody and had to be shot in the leg to stop him.
Hussain was arrested with an illegal consignment of approximately 1.17 kg of heroin. He told that these were kept in 94 soap boxes in a vehicle.
The official said that the market value of the seized drugs is around Rs 6-7 crore.
The police also arrested Hussain’s aide Ashadul Rehman in the operation. After the arrest, both were taken to Diphu for further questioning. A case has been registered against the culprits under relevant sections.
Meanwhile, in two separate operations in Assam’s Karimganj district, the police on Wednesday seized a total of 10,000 yaba tablets and about 12.5 kg of ganja.
A senior police officer said that four people have been arrested on charges of drug peddling.
