PTI workers pelt stones outside Islamabad court premises ahead of hearing on Imran

Islamabad (IANS) | PTI chairman Imran Khan and his convoy on Saturday reached outside the Islamabad judicial complex where the hearing in the Toshakhana case was to be held, police alleged, party workers started pelting stones at them. A large number of party workers, along with the former prime minister, tried to escort him to the court complex, Dawn reported, but were not allowed to do so due to security arrangements.

Imran left his home in Lahore shortly after 8 a.m. and said in a video message that he could be arrested, Islamabad police tweeted that Imran’s convoy had arrived in front of the judicial complex. “Activists are requested to clear the way so that Imran Khan can reach the court,” police said on Twitter.

It also claimed that activists pelted stones at the police and allegedly set a police picket on fire, Dawn reported. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has restricted live coverage of events outside the Islamabad judicial complex where Imran Khan is arriving for a court hearing.

Referring to the clashes between PTI workers and law enforcement personnel outside Khan’s Zaman Park residence, PEMRA noted with concern that satellite TV channels were showing live footage (sic)/pictures of the violent mob, according to a statement. were attacking police and law enforcement agencies.

The restrictions were imposed after two days of clashes between PTI supporters and law enforcement personnel, Dawn reported. It said footage or images were seen on TV without any editorial oversight during the recent standoff between political party workers and law enforcement agencies in Lahore, in which violent mobs used petrol bombs, injured policemen and police. It added that the live telecast of such footage on various satellite TV channels created chaos and panic among the viewers and the police. According to Dawn news, such mob activism not only endangers the law and order situation, but also renders public properties unsafe.
