Punjab: Police investigation has revealed that the bullets used by Khalistani activist Narain Singh Chaura in his attempt to kill senior Akali leader Sukhbir Singh Badal were procured from a policeman. Police had submitted a challan of the incident in the court on January 31. The 9 mm pistol used in the crime was part of a consignment of arms smuggled from abroad, while the six bullets recovered were given to him by ASI Nirmal Singh posted in the traffic wing of Batala police in 2020, a police officer claimed in the challan.
However, ASI Nirmal Singh died of cardiac arrest in May 2020. His son, also a constable, has submitted the death certificate to the investigating officer of the case. Apart from six live 9 mm cartridges, police had also recovered an empty shell of the bullet fired by Chaura at Badal, who was serving ‘tankhah’ (religious punishment) as a sevadar at the entrance of the Golden Temple on December 4 last year. He had a narrow escape as the bullet hit the wall after he was overpowered by policemen in plain clothes. Choura was arrested from the spot with the pistol used in the crime. He is currently in judicial custody.
