Punjab: Hospitals wear a deserted look as doctors’ strike continues

Punjab: Government healthcare centres wore a deserted look as doctors went on strike on the call of Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA). While beneficiaries registered at Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment (OOAT) clinics got their daily dose without any delay, those getting weekly doses on the recommendation of psychiatrists were seen arguing with the officials concerned.

Since the PCMSA had announced closure of OPDs from 8 am to 11 am for the first three days of the protest, patients kept coming to hospitals. “Now that doctors have stopped coming to OPDs for the entire day, patients have almost stopped coming for minor health issues,” said a lab technician. He said there has been a steep drop in the number of samples collected.

Justifying their move, the doctors said they would continue the protest till their demands were met. “Unlike earlier when our leaders used to call off the strike after getting assurances, this time the struggle will be taken to a decisive turn,” said an SMO. The key demands of the protesting doctors are – restoration of Assured Career Progression Scheme, payment of pending CPC arrears and 24X7 security at all healthcare centres.
