Punjab: Human Rights Commission takes cognizance of insurance fraud case

Punjab: The Punjab State Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a recent news report, “Dead man walking! Young man struggles to prove he’s alive amid a ₹1.4 crore insurance scam.” Vishal, 19, of Nava Purba village, was deeply shocked when he received his own death certificate issued by the Chief Registrar of Births and Deaths of Punjab.
The shock deepened when he received a report from a religious organization in Tarn Taran confirming the immersion of his ashes, along with an affidavit from a woman declaring him dead. The Commission has sought a status report from the SSP of Ferozepur, to be submitted a week before the next hearing date on October 22. Sources said the police have already registered a case against Sukhdev Singh, Sanjana, and Sahil Khanna.
