Putin will contest again in the 2024 presidential election

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Friday that he will seek re-election for his third consecutive term and sixth overall in 2024, media reports said.

He announced this at a ceremony in the Kremlin, where he awarded Hero of Russia medals to servicemen participating in the special military operation against Ukraine, RT reports.

Putin outlined his decision to run in the elections in response to a question from Hero of the Donetsk People’s Republic Artyom Zoga.

Under amendments made to the Russian Constitution in 2020, a person can hold the presidency for only two terms. However, this provision is not retroactive, which enables Putin, who was first elected president in 2000 and held the post until 2008 before returning as prime minister in 2012, to contest the election.
