New Delhi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a ‘red’ alert for Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tiruvanelli and Kanyakumari districts. Speaking to ANI, Chennai Regional Meteorological Center Director S Balachandran said, “For the next 24 hours, ‘red’ alert will remain in place for Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tiruvanelli and Kanyakumari districts.” The Tamil Nadu government on Monday declared holiday in all schools, colleges, private institutions, banks and financial institutions in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Tenkasi districts due to heavy rains.
Night rains continued in Thoothukudi district and 40 lakes in Kovilpatti area have reached full capacity. According to IMD forecasts, heavy rain is expected at one or two places in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi.
Kovilpatti, Ettayapuram, Vilathikulam, Kalugumalai, Kaythar, Kadambur, Vembar, Surangudi and other areas of Thoothukudi district have been receiving continuous rain since Sunday morning.
Due to this heavy rain, the rivers and lakes around Kovilpatti have reached their full capacity and water is flowing from the lakes.
Apart from this, when rain water started flowing out of the river in Kousalipatti and Inam Maniyachi areas, sandbags and JCB machines were used to stop the water.
